FAQ

What is the (STEM)2 Program?
Cypress College currently has a partnership with California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), which is designed to increase student participation, persistence and success in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The (STEM)2 Program is intended to create opportunities for you to become more informed about science study and diverse career choices. This program will help you succeed in our science programs and prepare you to transfer to a four-year university.  Program benefits include:  Counseling, transfer support to any 4-year university, peer mentoring sessions, specialized workshops, networking opportunities and much more!

What majors apply to be a participant of the STEM Program?
Any major related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics, which can include many majors not commonly thought of as a scientific discipline.  If you are not sure if your major applies, please contact our STEM Director, Yanet Garcia at ygarcia@cypresscollege.edu or stop by the STEM Program Office in the SEM Building, Room 213.

Where can I apply?
The online application is available via our STEM Website at www.stem2cypress.com.  Please fill out the application including the Supplemental Form.  In addition, you will need to submit a copy of your current class schedule along with your current Financial Aid Award for the year you are applying. Submit the application package to the STEM Program Director, Yanet Garcia located in the SEM Building, Room 213.

Do I need to have a certain amount of units completed to be considered for the STEM Program?
At this time, there is no unit minimum. It is recommended that students have Math 40 completed with a grade of C or better.

How soon will I find out if I have been admitted into the STEM Program?
Students will be notified the third week of the spring and/or  fall semester.

What are the minimum requirements to stay active in the program?
Students in the STEM Program will need to attend a mandatory orientation, a minimum of two STEM-related workshops and meet with a Counselor at least once per semester.  You may also opt to meet with one of our on-campus peer mentors to count as a STEM-related activity.  Completing these requirements will be necessary in order for students to take advantage the special admission consideration with CSU Fullerton.  In addition, active STEM students will have the opportunity to apply for a variety of summer research opportunities.  The more you participate, the more benefits you are likely to receive!

What happens if I miss one of the requirements throughout the semester?
Students who do not complete the minimum requirements by the deadlines indicated, will need to re-apply to the STEM Program the following semester.  Please keep in mind that you will have several opportunities to attend a variety of workshops throughout the semester.  Those dates will be provided ahead of time on our STEM Website, Facebook page and via emails.  This will give you plenty of time to plan ahead for you to be successful in completing the program’s requirements.

Who can I talk to if I have questions?
If you cannot find an answer on our STEM Program website, please feel free to contact Vickie Nguyen at vnguyen@cypresscollege.edu or you may also contact the office with any questions in the SEM Building, Room 212 or 213.
